Title: Power system with 100% renewable energy: the long wait…
Abstract: The need for decarbonization of the society and economy, due to the climatic threats, will lead to an increase of electricity consumption in conjunction with a large scale penetration of renewable power sources on the generation mix during the next years. By 2050, Portugal aims to have an electric power systems with electricity consumption resulting from almost 100% renewable power generation. This talk will be about the challenges and opportunities that such change will bring to the planning and and management of an electric power system aiming at such ambitious target.
Brief Biography: João A. Peças Lopes is Full Professor at Porto University (FEUP) where he teaches in the graduation and post graduation areas. He is presently Associate Diretor and Coordinator of the TEC4Energy initiave at INESC TEC, one of the largest R&D interface institutions of the Unversity of Porto. His main domains of research are related with large scale integration of renewable power sources, power system dynamics, microgeneration and microgrids, smartmetering and electric vehicle grid integration. He was Chair of the Selection Committee of the public tender that decided on the integration of 1800 MW of wind generation in Portugal, launched by the Portuguese government in 2005. He supervised 28 PhD Thesis. He is author or co-author of more than 400 papers and co-editor and co-author of the book “Electric Vehicle Integration into Modern Power Networks” edited by Springer. He is a Fellow from IEEE. He is also member of the Power Systems Dynamic Performance Committee of the IEEE PES. He is Editor of the (SEGAN) Sustainable Energy Grids and Networks journal.
